Things to Keep in Mind About Feather Pillows

Although they are not too much trouble, feather pillows do need more maintenance than a synthetic pillow.

The first step is to make sure the pillow is always covered with a cover that can be removed and washed as it gets soiled. Even with this step, your pillow will probably become soiled over the years.

It is not a good idea to place old pillows in a standard washing machine. Old pillows are often weak at the seams, and you are likely to end up with feathers all over your machine. This is not only time consuming to clean up, it can even clog the machine and break it. The best way to clean old feather pillows is to take them to the dry cleaner.

If you have a newer feather pillow that appears strong enough to go through the washer use only cold or warm water, and always use a very mild soap. The delicate cycle on your machine should be used when washing feather pillows. After your pillow has gone through the wash cycle inspect it to make sure it is still in good shape. At this point you should either use another rise cycle or an additional wash cycle without soap, depending on the shape of the pillow. It is best to wash two pillows at one time to keep your machine from going out of balance. When it comes time to dry your pillow it is a good idea to throw in a clean pair of sneakers as well. Use the low cycle, while it may take longer it will help protect your pillow. After your pillow are dry make sure to fluff them before using them.
