Are
Feather Beds Really High Maintenance?
The
best feather beds come with a cover that can be
removed and washed regularly.
Many people think that feather beds are old
fashioned and out of date. They seem like some
long gone artifact that could only be inherited
down the family line. The good news is that
wonderful brand new feather beds are still
available
While old feather beds were particularly
susceptible to causing allergic reactions,
mainly from dust, today’s feather beds are made
using feathers that are cleaned completely. The
feathers are then covered by a tight woven
fabric, primarily cotton. There will be channel
baffling sewn through the length of the mattress
to help keep the feathers in place and the bed
even.
The best feather beds come with a cover that can
be removed and washed regularly. If your feather
bed does not have a removable cover it is not
recommend that you take your bed apart to clean
it. As a luxury item, almost any feather bed you
purchase will be well made and come with a
comprehensive warranty.
One thing that hasn’t changed about feather beds
is that they need to be treated well to avoid
mold and rotting. Feather beds need to breathe,
so be sure to avoid covering it with a plastic
covering of any kind. For feather beds that do
not have a removable cover, lightly spot clean
any soiled spots as soon as you see them. If you
fail to clean your bed regularly you will need
to take it to a dry cleaner that specializes in
cleaning feather items, a task that is usually
both difficult and expensive. You will have to
negotiate with your cleaner whether or not they
will pick up and drop of your mattress for you.
