Comforter Choices
Down
is the perfect match of a light and plush
filling with the capacity to keep you nice and
warm.
There is no better bed covering than a down
comforter, especially in colder climates. Down
is the perfect match of a light and plush
filling with the capacity to keep you nice and
warm. Where the down that is in your comforter
is produced will make a difference in how much
warmth your comforter will provide, feathers
collected from geese living in colder, northerly
climates will be warmer that feather collected
from geese living in warmer temperatures. Think
about where you live, whether your home is well
insulated or drafty, and the usual outside
temperatures in your areas when you go to choose
a down comforter.
The down collected from the Eider duck, known as
Eiderdown used to be the standard filling for a
down comforter. These days down from the
Icelandic wild Eider is in very limited supply
due to its protection from commercial
harvesting. There are still a select few
Eiderdown comforters produced from feathers
collected from empty nests, but these are very
rare and very expensive. They are out a reach
for most regular people.
Some of the large down comforters also include a
larger percentage of feathers as filler. While
this helps to make them more affordable, the
feathers often poke through the covering making
them very uncomfortable, just as with a feather
pillow without a proper cover. Most down
comforters do not require the firmness that
these extra feathers provide.
How much Down Is in Those Down Comforters?
The number of down clusters in the filling of a
comforter is how the rating number is
determined. The purest comforters are probably
about 95% down, even though the manufacturers
may claim 100% down. There are small feathers
that get mixed in with the down, and it is very
difficult to remove then all. In some states in
the United States the regulations state that a
comforter that is as low as 75% down can be
labeled as 100% down. While 75% will be
wonderfully warm and cozy in all but the very
coldest climates, it is still nice to be able to
know what is really inside your comforter.
